It was a brutal end to the season for Gerrard Xie and DAMS Lucas Oil at Monza. Driving car #31, the Hong Kong-born racer was collected in a first-corner incident during the FIA Formula 3 round at the Italian Grand Prix weekend, sending his car airborne before it came back down hard. Remarkably, every driver involved walked away from the scene, but the impact proved more serious than it first looked. Xie, who had been sitting P22 in the standings with a maiden F3 win to his name, was subsequently ruled out of the season finale at Madrid. DAMS Lucas Oil confirmed his withdrawal, with the extent of his injury from the Monza shunt not disclosed. Speaking on Instagram, Xie described the news as difficult to take in, having prepared for the final round only to be told he’d have to watch from the sidelines instead.
